EU may ban miniature hotel toiletries and disposable food containers in fight against wasteful packaging.

This proposal is part of the European Green Deal, a pan-European plan to reach zero by 2050, decouple economic growth from resource use and promote a circular economy.

In Europe, each person produces on average almost 180 kg of packaging waste every year. Packaging is one of the main culprits, accounting for 40 percent of the plastic and 50 percent of paper used in the EU.

According to the European Commission, plastic packaging waste could rise by 46% by 2030 if no action is taken.

Which packaging does the EU want to ban?

The proposed revision of EU packaging waste legislation aims to make all packaging reusable or recyclable by 2030. It also aims to get rid of waste packaging, support recycling and bring clarity to the proper use and disposal of biodegradable plastic.

Under the new law, some forms of waste packaging will be banned, including single-use food and beverage packaging when consumed in restaurants and cafes, single-use packaging for fruits and vegetables, as well as miniature shampoo bottles and other miniature packaging in hotels.

Consumers will also be given the option of reusable packaging in restaurants and cafes of a certain size.
