News came this week of the deaths of two Americans who, along with two other comrades, were vacationing in Mexico. All four were on their way to Matamoros, once a popular spring break destination. Today it is a battleground for drug cartels.

At the entrance to a Mexican city, a car of tourists came under fire. The FBI released a statement saying that four Americans were abducted and taken away by armed men.

The video posted on Facebook shows them being loaded into a car. One is clearly alive, but the rest appear dead or injured.

On Tuesday, Mexican authorities confirmed that two were killed and two others were rescued and brought back to the US.

Matamoros was once a popular holiday destination, but the city has been plagued by infighting between powerful drug cartels for years.

The tragic incident again raised the question – Is it safe to travel to Mexico today?

Out of the country's 32 states, six, including Tamaulipas, where Matamoros is located, have a Level 4 “do not travel” advisory; because of the risks of assault and kidnapping. The other five include Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Zacatecas.

Of the remaining 26 states, seven have Level 3 warnings (“Reconsider Traveling”) and 17 — level 2 warnings (use extra caution). Quintana Roo, home to the popular tourist destination Tulum, and Mexico City fall into the Tier 2 category due to the risk of crime.

The states of Campeche and Yucatan are considered absolutely safe for travel.
