Tourists in the Kuril Islands complained of a mysterious illness

A group of tourists exploring Iturup Island in the South Kuriles complained of symptoms of an unknown illness.

The travelers set off to the Baransky volcano (1132 m) in the central part of the island. It is located 22 km from the city of Kurilsk. It is a stratovolcano with a central extrusive dome. Its last eruption was in 1951.

The total length of the route was 60 km. When the group approached the foot, three of the four members of the expedition fell sharply ill. The men developed symptoms of tachycardia and allergies, the temperature rose.

For about a day, rescuers could not reach the victims due to bad weather conditions. The helicopter could not fly to the place of emergency. As a result, only two days later, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reached the poor fellows on a boat.
